Jarred From a Nap

September 7, 2014 By Ron

I was jarred from a Sunday afternoon nap just minutes ago by loud screams and barking next door.

After jumping up and getting my favorite tool for confronting threats, I stopped and thought, “maybe I should check the Vikings game score”

Sure enough, they’re ahead. The screams are explained. Favorite tool for confronting threats safely locked away.

Earl

Earl

Meet Earl.

Earl just turned 40. He’s a Japanese Juniper that has been Bonsai’d.

For many years, I’ve kept Bonsai’d plants and Earl here, is my latest acquisition.

Earl came from the same place that my last Bonsai came from. Only now………..Earl’s former caretaker has passed on and his son runs the business. So, he’s been cared for by two generations of folks and entrusted to me. (For a price that shall remain undisclosed)

Other Bonsais at “Yardley Gardens” have lived interesting lives and receive names that may reflect distaste for a particular person. If you care for them correctly, they flourish. But they’re in a pot and cannot overcome you. Now that may sound weird but I remind you that I have been certified as “perfectly normal” by a major healthcare provider. And………I will never have a Bonsai named “Essentia”.

When our youngest son, Greg, was in college, I came home one afternoon after work and found a ransom note and a very small branch off of the plant. The note said, “If you ever want to see Dave (another Bonsai plant named after somebody from a sate to our southeast) leave two bags of groceries containing the following items outside the Campus Apartments or you’ll never see him alive again.” Dave had been kidnapped. The ransom was paid, and “Dave” came home unscathed.

Yet another Bonsai traveled with us when we went camping. (They need to be cared for daily). It had been set outside the camper to get some sun while I took a rare and well deserved Saturday afternoon nap. When I woke and went outside it was gone and a very small stack of “Bonsai’d” firewood had been left in its place with yet another note.

The note explained that since I hadn’t brought firewood for the community campfire, the community had cut down “name withheld to protect the innocent with the same name” to make up for my share of the campfire wood.

And now there’s Earl.

Earl is named after a guy who drives a red Chevy S-10 at 30 MPH in a 55 MPH speed limit area during peak morning drive time. Earl pulls out right in front of you and just pokes along. Earl can make you late for work and he throws his cigarette butts out the window. Earl can frustrate you without even trying.

But I’ve got him now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m off to the doghouse now.

Old Dogs Long Gone

June 16, 2014 By Ron

As part of tradition during our Hoyt Lakes camping weekend, we jump on the bicycles and roam the streets of Hoyt Lakes for rummage sales. We’re all parents with grown, or soon to be grown, kids. It’s not a “geezer parade” but more than one of us does have some gray hair.

My bike had a flat tire so I found myself riding another bike. It had one of those cushioned, wide, spring loaded seats. It was a bike with old style pedals that I didn’t have to clip in to. And, it only had seven speeds. I mean really……..who’d ride a bike like that? There wasn’t any front suspension. There wasn’t a Shimano XTR derailleur. What if my mountain biking friends caught me riding a bike with Schraeder valve stems? You just can’t jeopardize tire rim strength like that. It had street tires for crying out loud……………..

It was good that we were in Hoyt Lakes where nobody I knew could see me. As one of the youngest of our group passed a young man who was walking along the same street, the walker commented, “That’s something you don’t see every day. A bunch of old people riding bicycles.”

We had some passengers along with us. At least three knee surgeries followed our every turn. A couple of serious illnesses overcome, followed behind. And more than a few “old dogs long gone” ran along with us, happy to be out with their masters on a summer bike ride.

The “old dogs long gone” would lie peacefully around the campfire later that night amongst the “new dogs still here.” Lively conversation about new drink holding gadgets, snacks, and a review of the day’s activities kept us engaged.

Things have changed around the campfire as well. At one time during the evening, as we all sat around the fire, there were at least seven smart phones and three “I Pad book” reading things illuminating their reader’s faces. The battle to prohibit them from the campfire gathering had been lost long ago. Perhaps someday, even the campfire might be digital.

Then my phone beeped to me. One of my apps was telling me that the International Space Station would soon be flying over. At 10:51 PM, it would appear from the NW and disappear into the east. It would be visible to us for four minutes.

It was awesome! It was right on time! We all watched it fly over. Some of us waved. Some followed it on their “Sky Watch” constellation app. Even the book reader things got set aside for a couple of minutes.
Then, the glow of the phones surrendered to the glow of the fire. The “old dogs long gone” went back to wherever they go, and we took our leave of yet another campfire in Hoyt Lakes, MN.

There will be another campfire with the same good friends and “old dogs long gone” in a few weeks. Until then……….peace.

I’m off to the doghouse now….
